The Moose valve functions both as a one way air valve and as a moisture control system. This water trap is less restrictive, meaning it lets in more moisture from your breath. Great for pipers who live in dryer climates as well as dry blowers. This valve will fit all makes of great highland bagpipes.

Features include:

  • 100% airtight
  • Large size bore
  • Easy installation and removal
  • Ideal for any bag set up
  • Adjustable from 3/4" to 7/8"
  • Effective water trap
  • Fits internal tapered stocks
  • No drilling or reaming needed
  • No hemping required

    I love it!

Posted by Rydel Van Dyke on 21st Feb 2023

My pipes came with a Merrick type of valve and it didn't take long before I could feel a faint blow back on my tongue while practicing. Griffin Hall showed me how to adjust it so it would stop that, and that worked for a while. I could also feel it 'popping' open when. That wasn't a big deal, but I found it somewhat distracting. At Mr. Hall's recommendation I purchased one these valves. He installed it for me, and the difference was immediately noticeable. I didn't feel any air flowing across my tongue. The 'pop' I would feel was gone as well. Maybe it's just me, but refilling the pipes seemed to take less effort with this valve as opposed to the one my pipes came with. I don't know if there is a better valve available, but as far as I am concerned at this point in time, this valve gets 5 stars because I like it and it works!

    100% airtight

Posted by Max S on 12th Jul 2022

I got one of the with my first set of pipes at Matt Willis's suggestion but it was on back order. So my pipes had the standard flap valve. When this arrived I put it in and it is absolutely amazing. It makes it much easier to blow steady and it doesn't "stick". I have been playing with this for over a year and it is still 100% airtight. As with everything that J Higgins sells I highly recommend these.

    Light still flashing when charging

Posted by Michael l on 10th Mar 2022

I email Glencoe and they said it was okay that it was flashing but I will never know when the chanter is fully charged !!!!!?????. Probably end up getting this chanter replaced or refunded. The high A doesn’t work that well either after screwing in the nut and moisturizing fingers. (John's reply: Hi Michael, I'm not sure about this review. It's entered under a moose valve which doesn't have any blinking lights. We don't deal with any company called Glencoe either, so I'm going to suggest that perhaps you may have gotten your reviews mixed up? We didn't sell you a chanter to my knowledge.)

    great valve, lousy instructions

Posted by Unknown on 16th Jan 2019

A brilliant piece of engineering, but the instructions leave a lot to be desired. It would have been helpful to read that with some stocks it may be necessary to tighten the valve before inserting it into the blowpipe stock. And it would have been a nice touch to read thAt when you tighten the valve you are forcing the plastic bridle over the adjacent rim --' and that is what increases the diameter.
