Learn To Play the Bagpipe Starter Kit (Deluxe) (In Stock)

J Higgins was recommended by a piper for my daughter, a musician, who has wanted to add bagpipes to her repertoire. The chanter seems well made and easy for a young person to learn on. I was glad to find a set that included a case, extra reeds and a very good book. The book is easy to understand and even gives clear instruction on the care and maintenance of a chanter. I'm looking forward to the joyful noise that will permeate our home.

This thing sounds awful. Most of the holes don’t play any notes, I ordered a new reed from a different source. So far unplayable. (John's reply: I'm sorry you're having difficulty. That is not an uncommon thing . The first time I played a practice chanter it sounded just like you are describing. I am hoping you have a teacher lined up to help you learn how to cover the holes and how to blow. It sounds like you're overblowing if you don't get a noise. Practice is the cure. John).

Received this item very quickly. It was easy to assemble and the instruction book has the lessons broken down and easy to understand.

I would suggest not shipping with USPS in the future. It is sitting at the same facility for 5days. (John's reply: Yes, USPS has been experiencing a lot of delays mainly due to COVID in 2020 and 2021. But, so have UPS and FedEx).

I recently purchased a beginner practice chanter set and boy was I amazed. This set is definitely worth the money. The reeds and the chanter were hemped well. The book is very easy to follow. Musical knowledge and theory will help you along. I will definitely look to this company for future purchases.

The kit did not contain directions on assembling the chanter and reed; so went online to find directions. Tutor book easy to follow. (John's reply: We show photos of how to assemble the chanter directly on the kit page as well as in our blog).

I'm very impressed with this starter kit for the price. The chanter is made of high quality polypenco with beveled holes and waxed hemp which makes for a nice seal when the chanter is put together for playing. Two reeds were a plus in case one goes bad or gets too wet to play and I need to swap out. I like the case as well and especially like the tutor book! The book has the fingering positions explained via pictures and reviews the importance of ensuring you do not move on to the next lesson without mastering the first. The book even explained that I would likely have thumb or wrist pain to start in my left hand when practicing/learning low G which would dissipate with time and practice (true on both counts by the way). I'm very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend to anyone looking to learn how to play the pipes without killing your wallet.

I gave 3 stars as I have no experience to rate any higher. While the chanter is good, there were no instructions other than the book. So for a beginner it is a little lacking. I just started, so far I have not found any information on the "online CD". I will update review as I progress

My husband and I are both learning the bag pipes and we just completed lesson 1. The chanter is high quality. Also, I found the lessons to be very informative and easy to follow. I love that the CD comes with exams/study materials. This has helped me quickly memorize the scales, notes, etc. The videos are also very helpful in hearing and seeing what the notes should be like. Lastly, J Higgins customer service was excellent. They answered my questions right away and were quite knowledgable. We also received our order quicker than we expected.
