This balmoral by Robert Mackie is the best. Good quality wool, well fitting, and just as I ordered it. Service from J. Higgins was good.

All Black Balmoral by R. Mackie
I found J. Higgins while searching for kilts online, then found that they also sold Balmoral Bonnets in a selection of colors! Rocky Roeger (USA Kilts) recommended the Robert Mackie brand so I had to finally replace my beloved all black Balmoral that I lost 17 years ago. I ordered two, one plain and one diced, and waited about a month since both were out of stock in late 2019, early 2020. I have been very happy with both bonnets and wear them daily, with or without a kilt! One star off because the cockade material seems to unravel on its own. Moreso on the all black, than the diced, so I have to trim it periodically. I only mention this because I never recall observing this on my original Balmoral from 1986. (Manufacturer unknown, but supplied by Geoffrey (Tailor).) I have seen at least one YouTube video on how to make your own replacement cockade/ribbon and sew it back on yourself.

Excellent Hat!!!
I just received the Balmoral Bonnet this week. I requested a special order. I wanted one without the toorie (pom). John Higgins was easy to deal with and was able to accommodate my request. It took an extended period of time to get the order done, due to COVID. However, John always answered my emails an communicated really well through out. The hat is fantastic. Great quality. I am a graduate of the University of St.Andrews in Scotland. The Balmoral is going to be used primarily with my academic regalia. I couldn’t be more pleased with the hat, the quality and J. Higgins.

Robert Mackie Balmoral
Excellent authentic balmoral. Cheaper balmorals are 1" smaller in diameter across the top. If you need the real thing, get the Robert Mackie.

EXCELLENT
This is my 3rd bonnet and my 2nd Mackie. I bought my last Mackie in 1998 so they are a quality piece. I had to wait an extra 2 weeks for a navy pom. I went with navy because I was tired of the red pom. The pom is a little smaller than the one I bought in 1998, however I like that and was glad to see it. I'll be changing the pom on my old bonnet to this smaller size soon. New, this one is much more supple and ready to wear than my older one was when I bought it. It was time to get a new one and this was one of the few places I could find one for sale.

Mackie Balmoral, plain black with black toorie
Understandable shipping delay for non-stock item. Bonnet is beautifully crafted and wool is supple, so no jocking is needed for it to lay properly. I’m ordering a second one (fawn) for day wear. Excess stitching on ribbons easily removed for bow tying. Well worth the cost.
